New Golden Bachelor, Mel Owens, 66, Won’t Date Women Over 60; Says His Preferred Age Range is for Cast is 45-60

Golden Bachelor star Mel Owens makes agist comments about age range for season 2 female contestants

Pot meet kettle?! Despite the show being dubbed The Golden Bachelor, season 2 star Mel Owens tells producers he won’t date any women over the age of 60.

In fact, the 66-year-old former NFL player turned attorney says his preferred age range for women cast for season 2 is 45-60.

Mel told producers that he wanted his suitors on The Golden Bachelor to be “45 to 60, just being honest.”

“‘If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them,’” the recalled telling one producer on the June 4 episode of MGoBlue Podcasts With Jon Jansen. “’This is not The Silver Bachelor, this is The Golden Bachelor.’”

He also told producers that his loves interests have “got to be fit.”

“Because I stay in shape and workout and stuff,” he said, noting that he asked producers to “try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.”

The retired lawyer shares two sons with his ex-wife, to whom he was married to for 25 years, and is now looking for someone to be his “perfect teammate.”

“I like to try new things,” Mel explained. “I like to be in the unknown…I’ve always been a guy who’s been sort of out there, not on the edge, but trying new things.”

Naturally, there have been mixed opinions on Mel’s comments, which some are calling agist. Others are quick to point out that the show is called “The Golden Bachelor” and is focused on finding love for those in their “golden years” of life aka retirement.

Tell us – Do you find Mel’s comments cringe and/or agist? Is having women in their 40’s compete for love on The Golden Bachelor losing the plot of the show?
