RHONY’s Brynn Whitfield Addresses Calling Ubah Hassan an ‘Angry Black Woman’ Amid Fan Backlash

Bravo fans turned on Brynn Whitfield in a New York minute after she called her Real Housewives of New York co-star, Ubah Hassan, an “angry black woman” during last week’s episode.

During last week’s episode of RHONY, the 38-year-old confirmed she made the comment about Ubah during an off-camera conversation, saying: “I don’t want you to come off like this, as an angry black woman.”

Brynn claims she was concerned that if Ubah portrayed herself in such a way that her beau Oliver Dachsel, would not want to marry her.

“I told her, I was like, ‘I want you to marry Oliver. I want Oliver to want to marry you,’” she said.

The two feuding RHONY stars each shared their sides of the story following a heated argument during a girls’ trip to the Hamptons.

Amid backlash, Brynn addressed her comments about Ubah on Friday via social media. She insisted that her comments “were conveyed without context.”

On her Instagram Story, Brynn wrote:

“I sat in shock this week, as off-camera interactions in the Hamptons were conveyed without context. To see my intentions twisted and my words misrepresented, flat out scares me.

I am deeply sorry if I overstepped that night in the Hamptons.

I am beyond sorry as this was never my intention.

The episode was made to appear as though I brought up this stereotype on my own and out of nowhere- which is not the case. The truth is, “angry Black woman” was brought up by Ubah last year in Anguilla. In a highly charged 4th wall moment in Anguilla, after the incident with Erin’s sunglasses, Ubah spoke directly into the camera: “Don’t you dare edit me to look like an angry Black woman.”

After Anguilla, Ubah and I frequently discussed this harmful stereotype at length. As a biracial woman, I will never know what it’s like to fully walk in Ubah’s shoes. I have experienced racism- from childhood to corporate America- and it broke my heart to see my friend devastated by the backlash she received online. I always offered love and support, and when she asked me for advice, I gave it.

(For the record, it was always mutual. Ubah was an incredible friend to me and always supported me through difficult experiences.)

During that off-camera night in the Hamptons, we both spoke candidly about our fears and triggers— as we always had. We hugged, said we loved each other and promised to do everything in our power to help one another. I told Ubah that everything she wants for herself, I want that for her too. And she wished the same for me…

I’m not sure what shifted after that touching moment, but i deeply regret and I am sorry if I overstepped. Ubah needed a friend to listen to the thoughts and fears which she expressed that night, she didn’t need someone to repeat them back to her.

I hope the powerful 4th wall moment that happened in Anguilla, well before the Hamptons, will be shown at this year’s reunion, so that this long-standing, nearly two-year-old issue can finally be addressed openly. A constructive conversation is much needed to clear the air and provide context and closure for everyone involved.”

Despite Brynn’s attempts to clear the air and save face, RHONY fans weren’t impressed and slammed her “unbearable” behavior.

“Bryn is starting to rub me the wrong way, especially saying for Ubah to not be an angry black woman cuz she wants Ubah (white) boyfriend to marry her,” one fan commented.

“Ubah was in fact acting aggressive but saying that her man is not going to marry her is diabolical and projection at its finest. Brynn has daddy issues!” a second fan wrote.

“Ubah should have dragged her ass,” a third fan suggested. “Brynn have several seats and choose your words correctly.”

“Brynn being a biracial woman police-ing Ubah’s ‘blackness’ just shows how uncomfortable she is with her African American side,” a fourth fan commented.

Another fan questioned: “How did she go from likable to last season to so dreadful this season?”

“To pick the only black girl in the group & say she shouldn’t partake in usual housewife activities bc her white boyfriend won’t find her attractive, is so preposterously racist that I’m shocked she said that with a straight face,” someone else shared.

New episodes of the Real Housewives of New York air Tuesdays on Bravo.
