Selling Sunset star Amanza Smith was blindsided by her recent health scare. What the interior designer thought was just a simple backache turned out to be so much more. The backache went on for a month until one night in May she collapsed at her home in Los Angeles. After collapsing, Amanza agreed to go to the hospital at a friend’s urging. Turns out the ache was actually a rare, life-threatening bone infection that was attacking Amanza’s lower vertebrae.
After getting an MRI and being diagnosed with vertebra osteomyelitis, Amanza’s doctor told her “One or two more days at home and you could have been dead.”
Now, the 46-year-old is opening up about her life threatening health scare.
“I thought I had a backache, and I almost died,” Amanza told PEOPLE. “The doctors and my friend saved my life.”
Over the summer, Amanza underwent two back surgeries with the second one leaving her with a titanium mesh cage along with rods and screws in her back.
“I am an iron woman, with rods and screws,” she jokes.
Amanza’s road to recovery is still ongoing and has left her with limited mobility. Her post-op treatment physical therapy and six months of antibiotics.
“There are so many things I can’t do, because I can’t lift more than five pounds,” she explains. “Sometimes my purse is too heavy. You can’t speed up time, but I’m very anxious to be able to do the things that I love to do. I like to decorate. I like to rearrange. I want to be able to hang things, but I’m very limited right now.”
Despite it all, the health scare has given Amanza a new lease on life and a fresh perspective.
“You know who your friends are when you become a burden,” she says. “Its like a rebirth. I will never take my mobility for granted again. When I can walk and jog again and do Pilates or ballet, I hope I stick to them because I plan on living to be 107.”
Selling Sunset is expected to return for season 7 in late 2023 or early 2024.
