The Real Housewives of Orange County is the OG Housewives franchise that started it all. There would be no Real Housewives of New Jersey or Real Housewives of Salt Lake City without RHOC.

RHOC debuted on March 21, 2006. The show follows the professional and private lives of women residing in Orange County, California. The first few seasons of the show specifically followed women who lived behind the gates of the Coto de Caza community in Orange County.

Initially, the show’s working title was “Behind The Gates,” with a documentary style format. The show was developed by Scott Dunlop and was inspired by ABC’s Desperate Housewives.

The goal of the show was to document the lives of wealthy women, who “lead glamorous lives in a Southern California gated community where the average home has a $1.6 million price tag and residents include CEOs and retired professional athletes.”

Season one of RHOC starred Kimberly Bryant, Jo De La Rosa, Vicki Gunvalson, Jeana Keough and Lauri Peterson.

The success of RHOC ultimately led to the development of the Real Housewives franchise which now includes numerous installments of the show in the United States and internationally.

RHOC also spurred two spin-off shows: Date My Ex: Jo & Slade and Tamra’s OC Wedding.

Currently, RHOC is in its seventeenth season and is the longest running Real Housewives franchise on Bravo.
